Field of applications and usage intensity of flooring are classified according to DIN EN ISO 10874. In case of flooring it is all about "mechanical" claim. Effects on environment and health are ignored.
Therefore a healthy and sustainable interior climate an effected directly by adequate flooring. Basically flooring belongs to near-surface products, and as a consequence substances which could harm people´s health are supervised cautiously. Products made of sustainable raw-materials are proven to be very adequate.
Life Cycle Assessments of floorings are a reliable and independent source for an objective evaluation of their environmental burden, which could be caused by flooring surfaces. Therefore, all needed raw-materials, energies and waste materials are calculated. That means all materials which are extracted from nature and later released to the environment.
Life Cycle Assessments influence and analyze all environmental impacts over a complete life-circle of a product – from purchase of raw-materials up to garbage disposal. A goal of a Life Cycle Assessment is as well to analyze influences of climate change on the depletion of the ozone layer, acidification of land and water or additionally the effect of over fertilization.
Legally all life-cycle costs are represented in the overall Prize. Longevity, possibility of cleansing and resilience belong to it as well.
For conventional flooring, such as PVC coating, synthetic-carpets or synthetic-rubber Life Cycle Assessments are essential, because they identify effects on the environment, such as high energy consumption or dangerous interior emissions. Conventional flooring often contains more risks for recycling and includes more problematic substances than floorings made of renewable raw-materials.
DBecause not only floorings contain a burden for people´s health, but the processing of adhesives as well, sensitive people should definitely watch for a full-declaration of ingredients (EPD). Corresponding formulations can be recorded within the performance description.
